Sometimes surrounding ourselves by many material thingsmakes us feel wealthier even when our pocketbooks are nearly empty.  It is a kind of compensation that makes usfeel better about our situation, but it does more harm than good. The clutter created from things you don’t really need keepsyou from making good use of what you have, and takes the focus away from a frugal lifestyle.

The truth is, when you are developing your frugal mindset,the best policy to follow is “less is more”.  

How many times have you gone through your closet and foundbrand new clothes you’ve never worn and won’t wear now because the style nolonger appeals to you? It’s great to hit the clothing clearance sales and buyfor next season, but you need to have some idea of the items you need tocomplete your wardrobe. No matter what the price, if you overbuy, you arewasting money that could be invested in another way.

There are some easy guidelines to follow when it comes to organizingany area of your home with frugality in mind.

Organize
Take Inventory 
Create a List

• First, you’ll want to purge items you do not use orneed.  Make sure these items ultimatelyleave the premises so they don’t re-assimilate into your household. Bringitems such as clothing to a resale shop, put items aside for a garage sale or donatethem to a local charity. Make sure to get a receipt for your taxes for largedonations. 

• Once you’ve purged, organize what is left by grouping like itemstogether and be certain everything has a place. As you are organizing, you may find even more items to purge as you refine your space.   

• Now that you have an organized space it willbe quite simple to take inventory of what you have.   

• The last step is to keep a master list ofitems needed.  That way you have a handleon what you have in your home so that you’re not purchasing items simplybecause you don’t know what you already have. When you make a list, keep a list of things you need soon and things youwould like to purchase should you find a good deal in the future. This method adaptswell to most any area of your home: the pantry, the closets, the toy area, the bookcollection, or your stockpile of household products.

These guidelines were especially helpful to me when Idecided to tackle my pantry. I was buying a lot of bulk dry goods and thepackaging made it hard for me to keep up with the amount I had on hand.  I created a Mason jar system to organize mybulk dry goods and it is really efficient. I keep like items together, I cansee what I have on hand at a glance and it’s super easy to make a menuplan. As I start running low on an item, I add it to my shoppinglist. Now this area of my pantry is extremely easy to maintain.





I hope this will help you to be more organized in yourfrugal life. Being organized is an integral part of living a frugal lifestylebecause we must find ways to efficiently use what we have so that we can putour money to better use in other areas. Remember, even if you only have time todo one area of your home right now, you will reap the benefits and that will motivateyou to take on more frugal organization projects in the future.

It's January 1st, and I'm so excited that I get to break out my brand new planner and start jotting down all the important frugal information and listing my organization goals for the next month. (Here are some easy guidelines to follow when it comes to organizingany area of your home with frugality in mind.)

A calendar is a frugal girl's friend.

First, I will check the newspaper and the web for upcoming estate and garage sales, free or low cost community events and restaurant promotions and get those recorded in my planner. Then I will write down the errands I'll need to run so I can combine them into the best fuel-saving route. 

My next organization goal is to go through my daughter's clothes (she's growing like a weed!) and pull the items that no longer fit her to bring to the resale shop.

The frugal house renovation project I have on tap is to change out the old knobs on my laundry room cabinets and place the "new" ones on. I was thinking of a way I could spruce up my laundry room on a budget and decided that changing the knobs was the way to go. I searched for good prices on knobs, and because I needed a total of 18-I eventually found the best deal at my local Habitat for Humanity ReStore. I paid about 50 cents per knob and that beat out the lowest price I found for knobs I liked. The knobs are neutral and they look new, so I feel like I got a great deal and it will change the look of my laundry room for under $10. I am still in search of a good deal on curtains or coordinating home decor fabric so I can change the curtains that were there when I moved in, and from the looks of them...have been there since the dawn of time.

On a side note, I also have some over-ripe bananas that I need to find a way to use up so they don't go to waste. This is what happens when you buy bananas right before the holidays...you leave town and come back to some very desperate looking bananas. 

That's okay, I've been checking out recipes and this one for Molasses Banana Bread looks like the winner.
